Hello,
I have recently installed archlinux32 in my old pentium 4 computer. Instalations was perfect by using the pentium4 architecture. No problems so far.
I have installed arduino software and of its dependencies is java:
java-runtime-common 3-1.2
jre8-openjdk 8.u212-1.0
jre8-openjdk-headless 8.u212-1.0
But when I try to open arduino software, I get a java related error:
$ arduino

Content of the error lof file is here:
/home/angel/hs_err_pid429.log
I hope can have an idea about how to fix it.
Thanks in advance.

From the java stacktrace, it seems it's trying to load a jar file from inside a zip and crashes trying to unpack the zip file. That SIGSEGV seems to have various causes but the most likely to be seem to be either a null pointer dereference or the exhaustion of virtual memory, but there's always the possibility I'm misreading the docs. To eliminate either of those bugs I'd try to find the file it's trying to unzip, and unzipping that manuallly beforehand.
I would suspect without further info that it's lying when it claims to have dumped core. One of those can be debugged with gdb to find out more about the crash, apparently, but learning to drive gdb is not something I'd especially recommend for newbies. Perhaps you've experience from working with arduino stuff though, I dunno.

https://bugs.archlinux32.org/index.php? … task_id=75
openjdk 7 and 8 have a disagreement with glibc on some stack layout or some security things (like
executable stack or size), didn't find out yet, what exactly.
Just use a modern JDK like 11 on pentium4.

BTW: I'm also using the Arduino IDE on my EEEPC, so if you have trouble, ask away (that is, for software
related things, I'm a noob if it comes to electronics).

The java stacktrace in that bug doesn't seem to be doing the unzipping of class files (if it is indeed an actual stacktrace). Perhaps the java lang side of things is a red herring, and it just crashes doing whatever it was doing at the time, where some actual bootstrapping code is what actually brings the system down at a predestined point in time.
FWIW I was slightly confused reading that comment thread since you say at 7pm last month that:
weird: on my pentium4 test machine with jdk 8 and 11 installed, I can switch to java 8
and everything is fine.
And seven minutes later:
using java 11 and javac 11 on pentium4 works..
But now you confirm that a java 11 JDK should work best, so I guess that's okay.

What I meant was, that those combinations work:
- i686/glibc, any jdk
- pentium4/glibc, jdk 11 (didn't test 10)
and:
- pentium4/glibc and jdk8 (and old original SUN JDK 7) crash.

Hello, and thank you for taking your time and effort with this.
I think I could have something wrong in my system. I have removed jdk 8 and installed jdk 11. But I'm still having a crash:
Java-related software installed in my system:
$ pacman -Qs java

But again, when executing arduino, it gives an error:
Here you can see the content of the journal after the error:

And is the error report:
Offline
Ok, this would indicate, that pentium4 and glibc/java is broken in any version.
Not pentium4-optimizing a central library like glibc will really harm performance
of the system thus rendering the idea of pentium optimization not so attractive.
There must be a way to get both.
Offline
My current workaround is to remain on i686 on my eeepc for having a running Java/Arduino IDE.
You can also just install the i686 version of glibc on a pentium4 system.
Side node: pentium4 can build rust thus firefox/thunderbird, i686 has a non-compiling rust currently.
Currently not everything works everywhere.
