I have some ideas:
- baloo is running an killing performance (at least, that's what xfce4 is doing)
- some daemons are not started and you hit some timeouts, those would be
because of broken library dependencies then.

So, most things which where broken on startup causing startup delays are now fixed.
Still, for instance Xfce starts up baloo, plasma things and god knows what. Pressing the "Application'
button in the startbar can take ages the first time.
I'm afraid, this is by design and you have to complain upstream (original author) about that.

I personally stick now to either awsome/cinamon/notion/ion3 or lxde/mate, as they are usable without too many 3rdParty library dependencies
breaking all the time and are reasonably fast on old machines.
Gnome and KDE are resource hogs. Xfce4 is on the same way..

Check with top if a 'baloo' is runing and eating all your resources.. :->
That's what's happening on my test machines with Xfce.
