Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

My computer is a Samsung NC10

lspci -v | grep -A1 -e VGA -e 3D

prints :

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd Device ca00

So I installed mesa and xf86-video-intel

I also set up a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file such as :

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Intel Graphics"
	Driver "intel"
EndSection

When executing startx it crashes after a little freeze and prints this log file :

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

I see an ioports error, which is probably ok?
And you have no Mode lines ion 20-intel xorg conf. What happens, if you don't set the driver in xorg.conf? X should be able
to pick up the driver automatically..

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

I see that the intel driver is loaded and I see a modeline. This seems all ok.

You call startx as normal user? Are you in the 'video' group? I was not aware, using 'startx' is still a thing.. :-)
Can you try as root? Do you have a window manager (at least a 'xorg-twm') installed?

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

Again, thanks for responding.
Adding myself in the video group does nothing, as starting startx as root.
And xorg-twm is indeed installed.

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

Xorg doesn't seem to crash as it terminates without an error. There might be something wrong with your xinit configuration. Did you create a custom ~/.xinitrc or modify the default /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc? You could also have a look at your systemd log.

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

One other thing chick comes to my mind: check with ldd or lddtree (pax-utils), whether the binaries you have in .xinitrc actually find their shared libraries.

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

My .xinitrc file is blank apart from one line executing bspwm
And journalctl prompts nothing for Xorg.

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

What happens when you disable (rename) your local .xinitrc? Xorg should then start with twm as window manager. If that's the case, then bspwm might have an issue causing it to stop.

Re: Xorg servers crashes at start (Samsung NC10)

Your .xinitrc must not be empty maybe. Something like this should work

#!/bin/sh
xterm &
exec twm

I think, when .xinitrc is missing, it does a default startup, if you provide an .xinitrc, you must exec the window manager as last
command (here the 'exec twm', given you have installed 'xorg-twm'), 'xterm &' starts an xterm in the backround, so you get a single
terminal in the beginning.
