[SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

After updating to linux-5.17.9-arch1-1.0 my ATI Radeon 9600 was not found or added as /dev/dri/card0.

Here is my Xorg.log: (line 44+45 is the importand and missing part in my eyes):

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

Presumably if you have a monitor hooked up to the output of that card, it won't be showing anything either.

Architecture: pentium4, Testing repos: Yes, Hardware: EeePC 901+2GB RAM+OS half on the SD card.

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

The console output at startup works as usual up to:
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.

The text is still displayed, only X and LightDM do not start.

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

Mmh. Strange, I was under the impression I added a lot of framebuffers and kernel DRIs for legacy cards, maybe
I accidently disabled the one above or there is a conflict with older drivers.

Is a kernel module 'radeon' loaded? Are there any messages in the kernel log ('dmesg') indicating problems around
/dev/dri or so?

The 'radeon' kernel module was loaded:

.

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

Let me rebuild the kernel and disable some of the things I enabled. It's quite hard for me, as I don't have a card
of sorts to test with currently. I'm suspecting some framebuffer driver to grab the hardware before the 'radeon'
driver has a chance.

Can you in the meantime check if the 'radeonfb' driver is loaded (when the /dev/dri/card0 is missing) and if yes try to blacklist it as mentioned in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_module?

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

With blacklisting of radeonfb the radeon was loaded and used:

lsmod | grep radeon
radeon                  1523712  5
drm_ttm_helper    16384  2 amdgpu,radeon
ttm                        65536  3 drm_ttm_helper,amdgpu,radeon

journalctl -k | grep radeon

Looks like Linux version 5.17.9-arch1-1.0 is running well with the blacklisting of radeonfb. Thanks a lot for your fast help and workaround!!!

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

He. Thanks a lot for testing. :-)
This means, I can leave the framebuffer devices there (though this deviates a little bit from upstream).

Re: [SOLVED] Linux archlinux 5.17.9-arch1-1.0: NO /dev/dri/card0

Hi! Just wanted to confirm that this happened to me today, same GPU on an HP nw8000 with kernel 6.0.

Blacklisting radeonfb per this post solved it!

Took me long enough to find the post though, whoops!! smile

THANK YOU THOUGH!
